! >> bill: we're bringing him back. mitt romney lying through his teeth about g.m. and chrysler! and got caught. but first -- >> this is the "full court press." >> on this thursday, other headlines making news, kelsey grammer raised eyebrows when he and his wife brought their 3-month-old daughter to hugh hefner's halloween party at the playboy mansion. he released a statement after a picture of the baby went viral online. he said his wife is breast-feeding and they don't have a nanny or a trusted baby-sitter. >> bill: 3 years? >> 3 months. daughter faith goes everywhere with them. she was asleep during the whole party. there were not any problems. >> bill: i don't have a problem with that. 3-month-old. come on. as if that baby is going to remember and be traumatized by being at the playboy mansion. >> the press pool on air force i was caught off-guard yesterday. the president's plane was not stocked with m&ms. the peanut chocolate candy is a regular staple on the aircraft. especially designed white boxe
, so misleading that chrysler and gm executives themselves are pushing back. people expect politicians to trim the truth a bit, but it's possible that mitt romney has just crossed a line that not even the most uninformed voters will accept, that jeep is moving to china. and look who's back, joe isuzu, speaking of dishonesty, this time campaigning, kind of, for mitt romney. >> i'm joe isuzu. guys, vote for mitt romney and you'll get a free binder full of women, you have my word on it! >> well, in case you missed that, it's a spoof, sort of, and it's in the "sideshow." joe isuzu is back. finally, let me finish with the best way to fight people who play racial politics -- get out there and vote. this is "hardball," the place for politics. >>> we've got new national polls on the presidential race. let's check the "hardball" scoreboard. first a new "washington post"/abc poll shows mitt romney and president obama with a tie. a new "new york times"/cbs poll has the president up one, 48-47. and a new npr poll has romney up one, 48/47 but the npr poll also finds that president obama has a four-
. actually, they had a negotiation to change. they went from, there was an old gm and a new gm, so they went through kind of a managed bankruptcy after all the bailout work was done. >> then ford did it all on their own. >> wait, this is not true. that is not true. ford had the timing on their side. they went and renegotiated their debt before the 2008 crisis hit. they happened to have an advantage of going to wall street to renegotiate their borrowing authority and it was the calendar. >> the ceo of ford said about mitt romney's prescription. he said if gm and chrysler had gone into a free fall bankruptcy, they would have taken the entire supply chain and auto agency with it. he said that in 2010. so that's really what -- >> speculation is not accurate. >> it is because there was no way that private capital were going to keep those companies alive into a chapter 11 reorganization. they would have gone into liquidation. we would have lost not only those two companies, but the supply chain. >> what he said, these are his words, the american auto industry is vital to our national interest as e
obama of helping chrysler and gm move jobs to china. chrysler says it is a big lie. gm says it is a big lie. the "detroit free press" says it is a big lie. does mitt romney even care about the truth at all? obviously not. we'll get into that and a whole lot more here on the "full court press." but here she is lisa ferguson out in los angeles. >> good morning everyone. mitt romney is headed to florida today to host events with senator marco rubio and jeb bush. he starts off the date in tampa and then heads to coral gables and jacksonville. paul ryan will be campaigning in wisconsin. some are calling the pair's reemergence on the campaign trial after supposedly taking time out out of respect for the hurricane victims. romney's official reason for the event yesterday was to collect donations for storm victims, but it sure looked a lot like a campaign, a big american flag on the wall campaign music, crowds and the press were invited. voters had to wait to drop off their donations until romney arrived to collect them himself. john mccain even went as far as to blas
. that drew another company into the fact check, gm, which had been saved of course by the auto bailout. a gm spokesman telling the press, "we've clearly entered some parallel universe." also from gm, "at this stage we're looking at hubble telescope-like distances between campaign ads and reality." but here's the thing. it is one thing to lie about your record or even your opponent's record. but what mr. romney has done here is to lie about a third party. in that third party's back yard. and you can tell that mr. romney's ohio lie about jeep is not going to work in ohio in part because ohio voters follow the car industry like it's the local football team. the romney campaign's running these ads in youngstown, for example. take a look at the "youngstown vindicator." the kind of reporting they were doing back in july on a local plant. "i think part of this relates to our focus on quality and make sure parts are right so we don't pass problems further up the line," said somebody's cousin. here's the youngstown paper in august on a plant expanding. "good news would be welcomed at the plant where
for gm. we used to say as gm goes, so goes janesville. we lost our plant. a lot of my friends from high school thought they could make a living for their families, they lost that. that livelihood is gone. i have a buddy that went from $25 an hour down to $9 an hour without benefits. we have got to help these people who are stuck in between, who are in the middle of their earning years when they are supposed to be building for their family, saving for their family, putting themselves on the path of pursuing their version of happiness, making the american dream realized for themselves and their kids. we have 46 job-training programs coming out of washington, spread across seven agencies. it is nothing but bureaucracy. the bureaucrats of the way, give people the ability to take this and get people the skills they need so they can get the jobs they want in the 21st century and have themselves back on the path to prosperity. [applause] it is so essential. open up energy, get people the skills they need, and it just like a case of common sense, we have to stop spending money we do not have. w
of chrysler and g.m. mad at you in the same day this is like an eight-car pileup. it just goes to the whole issue of romney being almost allergic to the truth on some of the issues. >> jennifer: totally. >> i think it is huge. >> jennifer: and i want to play just a snippet of that ad to remind our viewers who may not have caught up with that yet. let's watch this for just a sec. >> announcer: who will do more for the auto industry? not barack obama. fact checkers confirm his attacks on mitt romney are false. the truth? mitt romney has a plan to help the auto industry. >> jennifer: you know what kills me is this airs in ohio. ohio knows very well where mitt romney stood on -- >> the guy painted himself as a son of the auto industry and when you have the head of g.m. today saying this belies everything apparently he knows nothing about the way cars are marketed. i think it is very, very damaging and this is an ad that's been called pants on fire. >> jennifer: four pinocchios. there is another issue that's
gm -- >> big fan of the show. >> fantastic. >> nets/knicks, their game is still on. no one can watch it but the game is on. >> what did you learn, mark? >> one of two things happen, either a public pollster will be embarrassed and humiliated or barack obama will be re-elected. >> all right, john, these are not the dwarfs you are looking for. that's a great line. thank you for that one, carl. what time is it? at this moment time for chuck and "the daily rundown. ." >>> the aftermath, dozens of lives lost, millions still without power. hundreds lose their homes in a horrible new york fire and millions more are dealing with damage, floods, and transportation trouble. the cleanup is under way but the shock is far from over even as the first signs of normalcy emerge. after monitoring the storms from the white house, the president is heading to new jersey. he'll join governor chris christie to see the devastation on the ground himself. meanwhile, governor romney, he's back on the trail in florida. there's still just six days until the election. what does that tell us about where the
president obama talk about today are gm's reaction to mitt romney and this ad that his campaign has been running. >> that's critical. >> it is critical. and local tv and local newspapers in this state, especially in the northern parts where president obama needs to do really well have been pounding mitt romney for that essentially false ad that has been debunked widely and now that chrysler and gm and their executives have come out against mitt romney, that's been a really big problem for mitt romney. >> and they're adding jobs, they're even adding jobs at the honda plant. in the end, will you both be watching the cleveland area, cuyahoga county on the list? >> and the columbus area where we are right now, which is one of the swing counties here. a very, very important. but the bottom line is turnout. if the obama/sherrod brown organization can bring out the vote, they can win this state. but, you know, a lot fewer people voted here in 2010 and the republicans ran the table in ohio. so unless some of those 2008 voters come out again, the ones who stayed home in 2010, obama could have som
president obama of allowing manufacturing jobs to be shipped overseas. the ad says under president obama, gm cut 15,000 jobs and planning to double the number of cars built in china. and the ad said chrysler also plans to start making jeeps in china. but a general motors spokesman told "the detroit free press," quote, we've clearly entered some parallel universe during these last few days. no amount of campaign politics at its cynical worst will diminish our record of creating jobs in the u.s. and repatriating profits back into this country. okay. >> willie, what do you think of cargate? >> cargate. they shouldn't lie. >> i think it's subjectively untrue. the ad. i think that pretty much ends it, right? it's false. no? >> what romney said on the stump was false. the ad is true. >> right. >> it's misleading, but it's true. >> explain what you mean. >> i'm sorry. what? >> production in the u.s. that exists. they're making jeeps in the u.s., selling them in the u.s. they're talking about making jeeps to sell in china in china. romney initially suggested on the stump, wrongly, that they were goi
and "the detroit news." obama took gm and chrysler into bankruptcy and sold chrysler to italians who are going to build jeeps in china. mitt romney will fight for every american job. >> i'm mitt romney, and i approve this message. >> despite chrysler's flat-out denial of romney's china claim, the romney campaign took his lie a step further today with this radio ad in toledo, ohio, which is home to a jeep plant. >> barack obama says he saved the auto industry, but for who? ohio or china? under president obama, gm cut 15,000 american jobs, but they're planning to double the number of cars built in china, which means 15,000 more jobs for china, and now comes word that chrysler plans to start making jeeps in, you guessed it, china. what happened to the promises made to autoworkers in toledo and throughout ohio? >> that provoked a general motors spokesman to release this statement "we've clearly entered some parallel universe during these last few days. no amount of campaign politics at its cynical worst will diminish our record of creating jobs in the u.s. and repatriating profits back t
misleading and slammed by gm and chrysler. let me play it. >> they're running the most scurrilous ad in ohio. i want you to listen. one of the most flagrantly dishonest ads i can remember in my political career. >> so mark, a spokesperson of gm said it's completely untrue, to su miz the statement here in front of me. but this is about ohio, the ad about ohio and president obama still leads in ohio. >> the pushback you are seeing of general motors as well as chrysler is pretty extraordinary in a presidential campaign with major companies basically say that one campaign is being inaccurate in the tv ads. tamron, this has to do everything with ohio. this has all to do with the auto bailout and a reason president obama is doing better with white voters in ohio than might be in places in the south or battlegrounds like in virginia and florida, has to do with the auto bailout. getting support from a lot of people whose jobs are tied to the auto industry. another thing benefiting president obama has to do with the fact labor and the politics of labor very big flash points in the last couple of year
obama took gm and chrysler into bankruptcy. taxpayers still stand to lose $25 billion from the president's politically managed bankruptcy. these companies, chrysler in particular, we know their story, are now choosing to expand manufacturing overseas. these are the facts. >> remember the president talked about romnesia? well, it's contagious. congressman ryan. congressman ryan's caught it. let me tell you the facts. congressman ryan voted with us. he voted in the congress with us. >> joining me now, msnbc's joy reid and robert reich, former clinton labor secretary, university of california at berkeley economics professor, and author of "beyond outrage." joy reid, do you know florida? has no one told jeb bush this thing about his brother's lack of popularity with the american public? >> poor jeb keeps trying. he tried it at the convention too. he just tries to slip george in there every so often. >> you can't blame a brother, though. >> he loves his brother. you know, he keeps trying to get him back on the stage, and republicans keep saying no, thanks, we don't need him. it's also interes
federal relief, mitt romney is now claiming that he -- not president obama saved g.m. and chrysler. can you believe it? mitt romney ought to burn in hell for that lie. he keeps telling it. we'll tell you why that's wrong and a whole lot more here plus bring you all of the latest on the impact of hurricane sandy. right here on the "full court press." but first, we take a little time out as always to get the latest, today's current news update from lisa ferguson standing by in los angeles. good morning lisa. >> hey bill. good morning everyone. hurricane sandy not only is taking an impact on the east coast but it is also putting a twist in the political schedule today. we are just one week out from the election. neither candidate is campaigning as planned. president obama is staying in d.c. to monitor the storm and help prep for any disaster relief. mitt romney is also putting a stop to his events saying it is out of sensitivity for the millions of people in sandy's path. romney did have events scheduled today in o
when gm was getting bailed out delphi was going through bankruptcy and there were lots of employees salaried and union who were asking nervous questions about their pensions. >> how is our healthcare looking after retirement? how is our pension looking? everything is good. pension plan is well funded. >> we were told that everything was secure in your pension, and you plan on that for the rest of your life. >> until like its dayton area plants delphi shut down the employee pension plans handing them off to the federal government. >> when my pension went from 2,500 $50 a month guaranteed to the federal government saying you'll get $385 a month. >> and you spend years and years making your financial plan for retirement and going through all the numbers and wanting to live like you wanted to live and with your children and grandchildren, and then it gets taken away from you in a heartbeat. i feel absolutely betrayed. >> enter delphi's biggest auto parts customer gm and the obama administration's eagerness for a quick restructuring of the automaker, gm wanting labor peace agreed to rest
to help the auto industry. he is supported by lee iacocca and the detroit news. obama took gm and chrysler into bankruptcy and sold chrysler to italians that are going to build jeeps in china. >> romney's new ad running in ohio claims that president obama took gm and chrysler into bankruptcy. interesting. because romney preferred a managed bankruptcy for the car companies. he claimed that jeeps are going to be built in china by italians. the ceo of chrysler found that whopper too much to bear and issued a statement to say, . >> who will be best for the auto industry? it may not be the guy whose car ad is full of holes. joining me from detroit is jonathan cone. >> thanks for having me on. when we talk cars, i get out my transformers and have this whole thing about president obama being optimist prime. is the car issues going to be the thing that turns ohio voters? >> it is a huge issue. in ohio, 1 of every 8 jobs is tied to the auto industry. the voters there, they understand how important the auto rescue, the obama's decision to provide chrysler and g.m. loans. they know how important that
.com. >> the dow is up 140 and gm i think is just moving down. what's going on with gm, please nicole? >> we continue to get the numbers on auto sales and general motors coming out with auto sales for the u.s., rose 4.7% and they also raised their year end inventory. target, reducing stocks to the down side, and gm reported a 13% drop in the third quarter profit and they've seen losses in europe and that obviously has been a continued theme. stuart: all right, nicole, thank you. >> thanks. stuart: oh, i was waiting for some animation to appear, it didn't appear so i'll launch right into my take, here we go. look, when the storm hit, i was in mississippi. the state has a terrific economic education program and i was fully engaged with some of the teachers and students so i watched sandy from a distance. i came home to new jersey yesterday, here is my take on that. i flew from jackson, mississippi to atlanta georgia, and from there to washington d.c. and that's as far as i could get my plane or train. to get to the new york area, i had to drive, and that tells you something. three days after t
a plan to help the auto industry. he's supported by lee aiko can and gm. he sold chrysler to italians who are going to build jeeps in china. mitt romney will fight for every american job. >>> i'm mitt romney and i approved this message. >> mitt romney did actually say he'd let detroit go bankrupt and he opposed the bailout and said if we did it it you could kiss the automotive industry good-bye and that didn't really work out. when they endorsed him, they said in spite of him screwing up so badly. the point where they say barack obama sold gm to italians who are going to build jooirps in china. this appears to be a spin on this ad from ohio last week. >> i saw a store today, one of the great manufacturers in this state, jeep. now owned by the italians, thinking of moving all production to china. i will fight for every good job in america and i'm going to fight to make sure trade is fair and if it's fair america will win. >> that line about jeep moving american jobs to china? moving all production to china? that is not true. chrysler is not moving its production to china. that is not at al
took gm into bankruptcy and sold chrysler to italians who are going to build jeeps in china. mitt romney will fight for every american job. >> i'm mitt romney and i approved this message. >> the ad is aggressively misleading so much so that it caused panic calls from the ohio workers at chrysler jeep plants who feared their jobs are being outsourced and frommed gm and chrysler to set the record straight. the ceo of chrysler wrote an op-ed saying i feel obliged to restate our position. jeep production will not be moved from the united states to chi that. jeep assembly lines will remain in operation in the united states and will create the backbone of the brand. there was this response later in the day from gm spokesman in "the detroit free press" we've clearly entered some parallel universe during the last few days not of campaign politics at its cynical worst will diminish our jobs of jobs in the u.s. and the obama campaign worked up their own response ad and the president rebutted mitt prromne directly. >> you've got folks who work at the jeep plant who have been calling their em
a listen to this. >> under president obama gm cut 15,000 american jobs, but they're planning to double the number of cars built in china, which means 15,000 more jobs for china. now comes word that chrysler plants will start making jeeps in, you guessed it, china. >> dana, i'm completely confused here. romney is now saying the bailout cost gm jobs, but he's also said obama did exactly what romney had prescribed. help me. >> well, let me see if i can here. what happened is romney put together this -- first of all, he started at a campaign rally misquoting what chrysler was, in fact, doing. they're not moving jobs to china. they're increasing some work in china to get around the tariffs over there. they've added 7,000 jobs in north america. the fact checkers went after him for that, so he put out an ad essentially saying the same thing on television. the fact checkers went after him for that and he put out a new ad on the radio making a worse and more false allegation. some time ago the pollsters said we're not going to let the fact checkers dictate our campaign and nobody can argue with
,000 jobs that were created last month according to the adp report. gm reports an increase in sales, and housing construction numbers are up. all this is good and unemployment numbers are coming out tomorrow which probably show we've had 33 consecutive months of job growth and more than 5.2 million jobs. that's all good news the president can point to in saying we're moving forward, not backwards. >> amy, the political buzz story of the day. on a lot of front pages of blogs and newspapers, you've got this picture of the president and chris christie, both of them praising each other yesterday. let me play a little of the back-and-forth. >> there will be some folks who will criticize me for complimenting him. but you know what? i speak the truth. that's what i always do. sometimes you guys like it. sometimes you don't. sometimes politicians like it. sometimes they don't. but i say what i feel and what i believe. and i'm just doing the same thing with the president of the united states. so i did pinch myself every day. you know, like when i got on marine one, i'm pinching myself, belie
of the -- the ceos of chrysler and gm had to come out and say you're lie being us and you're going to hurt our sales with your lies. he's not really keeping up with business there, but i have to tell you also, earlier this week he got subsumed by the sandy coverage as it should have, but i put out a story with another videotape in which mitt romney talking to a fund-raiser earlier this year says, you know, there's a better business environment in china than the united states. well, why is that? it's because they have no worker protections, no environmental -- >> they have no human rights, david. >> and low wages. so is he saying he wants to bring us back to that point? like to the days of cal coolidge as joy suggests? >> david, yes. >> there's a lot going on that doesn't compute and when it does compute it's rather scary. >> there's something called the moonlight magnolia theory of economics. the south practices it right now. when you strip away unions and you can lower wages, businesses are more profitable. that's why wall street -- you see the stock market tick up when companies lay people off bec
campaign has countered with a new ad in ohio and michigan. >> gm calls romney's ads politics at its cynical worst. and chrysler's ceo said it's simply not true. we know the truth, mitt. >> that's exactly what i said. the headline you read which is let detroit go bankrupt. >> when romney airs these grossly false ads, it opens up the door obviously for the obama campaign to hit back hard. in the state of florida it actually gets worse. romney desperately needs to win the state of florida and he is running a spanish language ad meant to stoke the fears of cuban-americans. the ad tries to connect president obama to venezuelan president hugo chavez and fidel castro. "the miami herald" reports the romney campaign would not furnish the ad despite repeated requests. in other words, the ad is so outrageous, the romney campaign tried to slip it under the radar. obviously the strategy is backfiring. let's turn to annette taddeo, member of the miami-dade democratic party. annette, great to have you with us tonight. i keep saying the bread basket to victory for president obama is going to be south flori
chrysler and gm and ordered to ship those jobs, and the production overseas to china. that was shall did -- and he got attacked by the republican papers in the state including the youngstown vindicater being indefensible. and i just think it had to be the product of, conclusion that the auto bailout really was a mountain too high for him to climb. and they had to somehow destroy booma's credibility. >> woodruff: and the romney campaign is saying the ad is accurate, that it is factual. >> they seem to be the only ones though, to be honest saying that. and so one of the questions of the campaign is does that hurt. has anybody been hurt by doing a dishonest adment so far we haven't seen that much evidence. i do think there is some evidence that people are just getting sick of it they are saying this is the most dishonest race we've seen. so it is possible that some of t very early ads that obama ran against romney last summer could turn out to be the crucial things that turn the whole election, i think a number of them were dishonest. maybe not as dishonest opinions about romney's business
